Not a licence, but you do need a valid California driver’s licence or ID card, and a Firearm Safety Certificate. There is no permit-to-purchase in California — the FSC and the background check are what stand in for one.

A California DL or ID card — 21 or older for a handgun — plus your FSC. For a handgun you also need proof that you live at the address on your ID:

• A utility bill from the last three months — water, power, gas, cable or trash. Not a cell bill, bank statement, pay stub, tax or insurance document.
• A property deed or a fully executed lease.
• DMV registration, a CCW permit, an 03 FFL, or a hunting or fishing licence.

If your ID is marked “Federal Limits Apply”, bring a second document proving lawful presence — a US passport or passport card, a certified US birth certificate, a Certificate of Naturalization, a Permanent Resident Card, or a foreign passport with a valid I-94. If the name on it differs from your ID, bring the document that explains why.

Yes — $26, walk in any day we are open, no appointment. That covers two attempts. If you fail the first you retake after 24 hours at no extra cost. The laminated card is $1, and a replacement through the issuing instructor is $5.

California maintains a roster of handguns certified for sale. If a model is not on it, no dealer in the state can sell it to an ordinary buyer. Every handgun on this site carries an “On CA roster” tag — if it does not have one, we cannot transfer it to you.

Ten days from the DROS submission, on every firearm, with no exceptions we can grant. Buying online does not shorten it — it just takes the firearm off the floor and puts it under your name while you wait. We text you the release date as soon as the DROS clears.

Three, and they are counted together rather than one of each kind — handguns, semi-automatic centerfire rifles, and completed frames, receivers or precursor parts all draw on the same three. Two AR lowers and a pistol reaches the limit. The window rolls: it is the 30 days ending on the day you apply, and a pending DROS counts against it. Shotguns and bolt-action rifles are not in the counted categories. This has been the rule since 1 April 2026; before that it was one handgun per 30 days.

No — not to you, not to anyone, anywhere. California requires a face-to-face transfer and a DOJ eligibility check on every ammunition sale, which makes shipping it illegal for us as the seller. Order online and collect it at the counter.

$5 at the register for the standard check, which is what applies if you already own a firearm registered in the state’s Automated Firearms System. It usually clears in under a minute. If you are not in the system yet, a full basic check applies — it costs more and takes longer, so allow time on your first ammunition purchase.

No quantity cap and no waiting period on ammunition. You do need a California DL or ID — out-of-state identification cannot buy ammunition in California.

Yes. Give the seller our FFL as the destination. Once their tracking shows the package delivered to us, come in with your ID and FSC and we run the background check and DROS. Our incoming transfer fee is $70 per firearm, with the $43 DROS charged on top. The ten-day wait applies exactly as it would on anything bought here.

Ask and we will email a signed copy directly to your seller — most of them require it to come from us rather than from you. Use the contact form and pick “Incoming transfer”, or call the shop.

Yes, for firearms and accessories — not ammunition. We ship the firearm to a licensed dealer near you who completes the transfer under your state’s rules. Enter their details at checkout; we verify the licence against the ATF listing before anything ships. $35 flat from us, plus whatever your dealer charges for the transfer.

No. We do not accept trade-ins and we do not buy firearms, ammunition or accessories from private parties. We can process a private party transfer between two eligible people, but we will not be one of the two.

On firearms, yes. Twenty percent down holds it. The balance has to be paid in full before we submit the DROS — so the ten-day clock starts when the item is paid off, not when the layaway opens.

Silver is $200 a year for 3% off everything plus $465 of included credits — three free DROS fees, three free FFL transfers, three cleanings and a gun safe. Gold is $500 for 5% off and $750 of credits. If you are buying more than one firearm a year, or transferring in regularly, the credits alone cover it. Consignment and promotional items are excluded from the discount.

Yes — show us a local shop’s advertised price on the same item, in stock, and we match it at the counter. Member pricing comes off the matched price, not the other way around.

Once the transfer is complete, all firearm sales are final — that is federal and state law, not shop preference. Items ordered specifically for you, anything installed, used or modified after receipt, pre-owned or “as is” items and NFA-regulated items are also final sale.

If a sale falls through because the California background check comes back denied, a 20% restocking fee applies to the firearm price, and the DROS and dealer fees are not refundable. Full terms are on the return policy page.
