The M44 is the carbine variant of the Mosin-Nagant, distinguished by its shorter barrel and permanently attached side-folding cruciform bayonet, adopted late in World War II and produced under Soviet license by allied states including Hungary. Hungarian M44s, identified by the "02" factory code of the Budapest arsenal, are a distinct and collectible variation of the pattern and were made in smaller numbers than their Soviet counterparts.
